Nicole Wong

Furniture/Product Design student based in Copenhagen

I was born and raised in Hong Kong and relocated to San Francisco to pursue my bachelor's degree in Furniture Design at the California College of the Arts in 2018. Continuing my passion for furniture, I am now enrolled in the masters's program at Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen.

I design furniture that seeks a perfect harmony between form and function. I focus on minimal designs that include repetition of elements, precision and order. To counteract the rigidity of hardwood furniture, I integrate organic, natural curves created with precise, mathematical measurements. I strive to design furniture that not only stands out on its own, but enhances the surrounding space it sits in.

My work emphasises the natural beauty and form of wood. By constantly testing its limits, I challenge myself in designing beautiful, functional furniture that seem unachievable. I push myself to defy my own understanding of furniture by manipulating and using materials in ways that I have never done before.

My furniture-making practice requires a delicate balance between creative intent and fine woodworking processes. Although I plan each component to the smallest details, I have learned to go with the flow and adapt to the material’s capabilities. I often start with conducting research on materials and practices I have a connection with. Taking inspiration from other designers, I create countless iterations of sketches until I end up with the final design.
